Up to this point, I’d never seen The House On Sorority Row. Though, I consider myself primarily a fan of 80’s horror, there are plenty of entries there that I’ve just never bothered with. This is one of them and now having seen it, I can’t believe that it took me this long.
Slasher movies were guaranteed box office back in the day. You could turn $500,000 into $10,000,000 with even just a minimum of effort. Unfortunately, a minimum of effort was all that most filmmakers were interested in giving and so there’s a huge glut of crappy slasher movies swimming among a few movies that thought to at least give the audience something.
The House On Sorority Row was a tough one to sell. It has all the usual slasher moves but in an unusual twist, it spends time developing its characters, giving us a cast that’s more than just knife-bait. It’s hardly perfect, but what is? In the end, it easily passes the Bechdel Test and ends up a little more feminist than I think anyone was expecting it to be.
In my own words: Let me give you a taste of what to expect from this movie.
Also, we launched a website which features all of our episodes and will shortly feature full episode transcripts if you’re into that sort of thing. You can find us in all the usual spots:
